Barbara May Foundation — LLB Photography

A photographic journal of the local people of Afar and the Barbara May Foundation. Located in the furthest north eastern part of Ethiopia, also known as the Danakil depression it is largely desert scrubland with shallow salty lakes and long chains of volcanoes. The Barbara May Foundation maternity hospital opened in the area in 2009 and currently it is estimated that more than 8,000 girls and women have been treated and had access to safe and dignified pregnancy and birth. The Barbara May Foundation trains local midwives as well as receiving a rotation of dedicated volunteer midwives from western countries. The foundation was created by Valerie Browning AM who has lived among the Afar nomads for more than 25 years and has worked tirelessly to improve their lives.
